Welcome to Carol Kerney Books

This website showcases the novels, nonfiction books, and educational games that I’ve written and self-published to Amazon.com. I’m delighted to share my books with you—and to share the journey too!

Because I’m a teacher, more than half of Carol Kerney Books combine teaching with storytelling. We’ll talk more about this later, but research shows that using novels to teach subject matter can produce real benefits to the students. Realizing that, I’ve written novels that unashamedly teach content but in such a way that the learning is integrated into the plot line. I guess we could call it stealth teaching!

Because I love history and dig archaeology (get it?), I’ve focused a lot on history and social studies. It’s interesting that so many kids (and adults for that matter) express a dislike of learning history. The term “boring” gets tossed around a lot. What a shame—when history is storytelling. So I decided to take advantage of that and combine my love of history with my love of writing.

These are both long-term loves. I wrote my first novel in a school notebook in my backyard in Lubbock, Texas. I was sixteen. I settled into a folding chair, and surrounded by my mother’s garden with its purple irises, red cockscomb, and green bells-of-Ireland, I penned a rousing science fiction adventure. I reread it lately. (Hmmm, enough said about “The Moons of Mercury.”)

Because I am self-published, we’ll track the adventures—the joys and disappointments, the triumphs and flops—of being an independent author. Woo wee—there’s quite a challenge to writing a book. You have to get the idea, work out plot and characters, write in an interesting fashion, and merge all that other stuff like voice, and story arc and illustrative language. Whoa—why did I ever think I wanted to do that? (The answer is if it’s in you it’s in you.)

But if you are a self-published author, you also have to play the role of everybody else who participates in bringing an idea into a finished book—you have to be the illustrator, editor, publisher, marketer, and salesperson. It’s a lot, believe me. But it’s definitely worth it when you hold your finished book in your hands.

Welcome to Carol Kerney Books! I hope you enjoy this journey together as much as I will enjoy it. I’d love to hear from you!
